NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT IN MALAYSIA

21st.December 2008

JOHOR BARU: Even if you're way past your university-going days, there could be one thing which could inspire you to go back to school.

The problem is that the "one thing" will only be ready in about 10 years so you'll just have to wait, or send your children there instead.

Education is set to go truly international once EduCity, Iskandar Malaysia's exciting educational hub, is completed by 2018.

OUR TRIP BACK TO NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY

We made our second trip back to Uni Newcastle Upon Tyne in 2006.
Manage also to get our old residence, Garnet House, Castle Leazes
Hall and the memorable Richardson Road flat!! Photos enclosed as
proof.

Maybe organise a trip back and have a disco party in the flats! I
think the Chancellor is the previous last Governor of HK.

REMEMBER SPECIAL AGENT MIKE LIM?

Time flies and it is interesting to read about Dr. Mike Lim in a recent Newcastle Alum News email. He is now working as a practising dentist in Singapore.

Mike and I used to stay in Freeman's Hall from 1976 to 1977. Quite a character if you know him or do not him but both of us got on well. Maybe we share some "odd" traits that we got along together. Imagine we have not seen or heard from one another since we left our Alma Mater in 1979!! That's 29 years ago and going to 30 next year.

Previously, Professor Zaini was Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Innovation and Research at UTM, which entered the Times Higher World University Rankings last year at #415.

A SONG TO SING ALONG AND PONDER FOR 2009 :(

(Sung to the tune Santa Klaus is Coming to Town)

> You'd better watch out
> You'd better not cry
> You'd better keep cash
> I'm telling you why:
> Recession is coming to town.
>
> It's hitting you once,
> It's hitting you twice
> It doesn't care if you've been careful and wise
> Recession is coming to town
>
> It's worthless if you've got shares
> It's worthless if you've got bonds
> It's safe when you've got cash in hand
> So keep cash for goodness sake, HEY
>
> You'd better watch out
> You'd better not cry
> You'd better keep cash

NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY TO SET UP CAMPUS IN JOHOR, MALAYSIA

Newcastle University to open in Malaysia

Leo Lewis

Newcastle University is to reach out beyond the chilly banks of the Tyne to equatorial South-East Asia with the establishment of a new medical and biotechnology faculty.

Its “NuMED branch campus” plays squarely on the huge local cachet and brand strength of the British education system, which, much like Premier League football, is emerging as one of the UK's most successful exports to the region.
