“Still Swinging After All These Years

Though not crazy like in Paul Simon’s song, they are ‘monkeys’ after all, and after 5 cycles, still mischievously swinging! The boys and girls who entered Bandar Hilir English School (BHES) in 1963, left Malacca High School (Form 5)1973 and (Upper 6) 1975 (MHS), will be having a Grand Reunion 60th Dinner/Party at COBRA Club, Petaling Jaya on Saturday 30th July 2016 at 7.00pm. Like their Chinese zodiac sign, this charming quick-witted versatile batch has many illustrious sons and daughters. Tam Chiew Seng IMG_20160719_114746.jpgis one of Malaysia’s hockey greats, representing the country on many occasions including the 1982 World Cup in Bombay and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Chiew Seng also excelled in cricket and played for Malaysia previously. Boon Hoon Chee,IMG_20160719_122907.jpg a former Malaysian rugby captain, recipient of the 2016 Sports Flame award for rugby contribution, is also a member of this batch. Boon was the National Rugby Coach at the Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou and Hong Kong Sevens 2011, and in fact, instrumental in organizing this 60th reunion event. Another notable personality is Tan Su Beng,IMG_20160719_114850.jpg one of Malaysia’s top bridge players. He has represented the country many times including the 12th World Team Olympiad 2004 in Turkey and the 2011 SEA Games in Jakarta when bridge was introduced by the host country. Su Beng also has the rare distinction of playing bridge with the late great Omar Sharif, the eponymous “Doctor Zhivago” when he was here in Malaysia many years back. Proton Motorsports General Manager Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood, IMG_20160719_115318.jpgwho groomed Karamjit Singh and Proton to win the World Championship in 2002, is another batch member and he echoed the sentiments “At 60, it is a wonderful privilege to catch up with your school mates of yester years. Some of us go all the way back to Standard One!” These people have known each other many years, some more than 50+ years, since Standard One primary school days from Banda Hilir English School right up to Form Six in MHS.

According to Boon Hoon Chee, former President of the COBRA Rugby Club, (Combined Old Boys Rugby Association) Petaling Jaya - true to their ‘monkey’ nature, exciting events have been planned for the evening recreating 1970/80s retro theme party, complete with broad belts, sideburns, butterfly collars, long hair, mini skirts, high boots, choker. Past teachers who taught this batch, have also been invited free of charge, fully sponsored by the students. The band Strollers 2 has been engaged for this private event, playing their popular hits like Silly Joke, Do What You Gotta Do and other all time favorites. As Boon Hoon Chee has put it, “Let the PARTY … begin!”
